About the game
Dark Rising was the first game I made. The story is a cliché:
*You wake up in the basement of a macro-corporation after a technological glitch has turned everyone into zombies.
You must escape using the weapons you find in the way out to kill the various types of enemies.*
I did it in Flash, with no programming knowledge: Mostly trial and error by browsing the Action Script 3.0 API suggestions.
So the game is designed to minimise programming: I made it work as a mix of QTEs and turn-based combat.
What I did in the game
- I did the narrative, game, level and UI/UX design -even without knowing I was doing that.
- I did the minimal and rudimentary programming necessary to make it work.
- I did all the 2D assets.
What I have learned from working on this project
- How not to talk to publishers. Don’t ask.
- How to design a game from start to finish -although without deadlines.
- How to design the level’ pacing to smoothly introduce all features.
- How to overcome your limitations by iterating your expectations -making them realistic enough.
